Ultra RS takes part regularly in several projects of R&D from which we aim to develop concrete applications for companies.

Here some examples of projects in which we take part :


COMPACT (aeronautics)

COMPACT is a research program of the EU carried out by Airbus, which utilizes 12 partners through Europe, of which ALCAN, Airbus U.K., the University of Bristol, the University of Limerick, Ultra RS...

The objective of COMPACT is to reinforce the competitiveness of the European airframe manufacturers. This will be carried out by creating new knowledge in multipurpose disciplines. The research carried out in this program will allow a complete, rigorous and determinist approach of residual stresses (RS) and a management of the deformation of part (palladium). This will lead to important economies in materials, the rationalization of process and the optimization of design of the aircraft ground. Indeed, it is estimated that tens of million euros are spent each year to avoid or cure distortion in components. The deformation of part is function of the residual stresses and is caused by the complex relationship between the material treatment, the component design and manufacture.

In other words, it is thus a question of understanding sources and of being able to envisage the importance and distribution of RS in alloy of series Al 7xxx, in particular with regard of their influence on palladium, and to develop new methods and strategies to reduce the final level of the deformation, for example by the modification of the material parameters of manufacturing process and by changing the form in which billets are provided.


NANOSURF (nanostructures)

The purpose of the NANOSURF project is the study, the development and the development on industrial parts of a process of “NanoCristallisation Superficielle” patented in 2000 by the UTT. The principle of this process rests on the actuation of perfectly spherical balls via ultrasounds. These balls come to strike the surface of the part to treat in a random way, which generates on the massive material surface a crystalline nanostructure with grains of a size lower than 20 Nm on a thickness of a few tens to a hundred of micrometers. It was shown that this surface nanostructure confers on parts exceptional mechanical and of surface properties.

This project comprises two parts :

HISC et Residual stresses

This project is a co-operation between Ultra RS in France and Det Norske Veritas (DNV) in Norway. Ultra RS developed a system to measure residual stresses in various materials. DNV has a significant competence and experience of the related problems by materials in industry at sea.

The aim of this project is to further develop the ultrasonic method of measurement of Ultra RS to propose a solution with the significant problems of cracking of Hydrogen-Induced (HISC) effort to which installations at sea are exposed.
